IRAN CONDEMNS SECURITY COUNCIL SANCTIONS

Iran on Tuesday rejected a U.N. resolution imposing new sanctions for its refusal to halt uranium enrichment, calling it "worthless" and politically motivated.

"This resolution is contrary to the spirit and articles of the International Atomic Energy Agency. It has been issued based on political motivations and a biased approach. It is worthless and unacceptable," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said, according to the state news agency IRNA.

Analysis McCain, GOP Face Fall Hurdles By Gerald Herbert (AP)

ap_photo_analysis_mccain_gop_face_fall_hurdlesJohn McCain's last-man-standing strategy prevailed. Now, onto the general election and the hurdles that come with it.

"It's an uphill battle. We have a tough fight ahead," the likely GOP nominee said recently of the next chapter of his presidential quest _ and truer words may never have been spoken.

Once McCain gets the 1,191 delegates needed to officially clinch the nomination, the party and its new standard-bearer then must convince a public craving change to keep a Republican in the White House in the midst of a drawn-out Iraq war and a sluggish economy.

That's a daunting task by any measure.

But several factors further complicate his run.

Approaching age 72 this year, McCain would be the oldest president ever elected and is certain to face doubts and questions that come with that distinction. His offbeat humor and occasional temper can be grating to even those who know him best. And, his record of breaking with the GOP to work across the aisle irks the conservative wing of the party that he'll need in the fall. Read More...
