Web-based program gives the blind Internet access    By Elaine Thompson (AP)

Blind people generally use computers with the help of screen-reader software, but those products can cost more than $1,000, so they're not exactly common on public PCs at libraries or Internet cafes. Now a free new Web-based program for the blind aims to improve the situation.

It's called WebAnywhere, and it was developed by a computer science graduate student at the University of Washington. Unlike software that has to be installed on PCs, WebAnywhere is an Internet application that can make Web surfing accessible to the blind on most any computer.

The developer, Jeffrey Bigham, hopes it lets blind people check a flight time on a public computer at the airport, plan a bus route at the library or type up a quick e-mail at an Internet cafe.   Read More...

CHERTOFF US HELPED MEXICO DETECT DRUG SUBMARINE

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Friday that U.S. intelligence led Mexican forces to a small submarine captured this week packed with 5.8 tons of cocaine.

Chertoff called the vessel's seizure Wednesday off Oaxaca state in southern Mexico "a great example of our cooperation."

"We shared information with the Mexican navy, but the Mexican navy acted alone in actually executing the seizure," Chertoff told a news conference in Mexico City.

Mexican navy Vice Adm. Jose Maria Ortegon said the 30-foot (10-meter) green submarine was equipped with GPS and a compass, ...

6th body pulled from Calif. canal after crash By Elias Funez (AP)

A sixth body was pulled from a rural, central California canal Wednesday after a collision between a septic truck and a sport utility vehicle carrying farm workers from a peach orchard. A seventh victim remained missing and is presumed dead.

The latest victim was found in the swift, brackish waters of the canal about 10 miles from the wreck in Westley, sheriff's deputies said. The victim was identified as Adrianna Garcia, 17, from Lodi.

Family members and witnesses said the SUV was taking six laborers from the orchard back home to Lodi, California Highway Patrol Officer Mayolo Banuelos said. Initial reports suggested that two people had been in the truck, but investigators now believe there was only one, the driver. His body has been recovered. Read More...

Investors got a double dose of good news that helped alleviate weeks of angst about the economy.

Three components of the Dow industrials _ JPMorgan Chase, United Technologies and Coca-Cola Co. _ issued comments that generally indicated that their businesses are holding up despite sometimes difficult economic conditions. Read More...

The Democratic National Committee plans to target Republican John McCain and help Democrat Barack Obama with an independent ad campaign run by veteran Democratic strategist Jonathan Prince, Democrats familiar with the decision said Thursday.

By law, the effort would be prohibited from coordinating with either Obama's presidential campaign or with the DNC. The ads would be financed with party money, however.

The Democrats asked for anonymity because the decision had not yet been formally announced.   Read More...
